Rooted in Advocacy

From a young age, I have always been drawn to speak up for what I believe in. My earliest account of this is when I was nine years old. My mother’s birthday was approaching, and I’d asked her what she wanted to do to celebrate. She expressed to me that we’d have to wait a couple of days after her birthday to do anything because she had to work. I was astonished. I could not comprehend that adults had to work on the most special day of their lives. Luckily for my mom, I had just learned in class what a petition was, and I was determined to show off my knowledge. I urgently wrote my first draft with the first sentence reading “We the people.” That petition was later read to her department staff. Although there was no policy change, one thing was accomplished: I spoke up for what I believed in.

Combining my Passion & Profession

As a child, I never imagined I would be a nurse. It was something I never dreamed of. As an adult, I could not be prouder of the work I do. The title nurse could easily be interchanged with the words advocate, motivator, and, honestly, superhero. I have been able to combine my passion for speaking up for what I believe in while also helping others get back to the best versions of themselves. I get to speak life and words of encouragement to my patients and their families. I never give false reassurance, but I always express that I will do my very best to attend to their needs and help them feel confident again. I have worn many hats in my nursing profession, but being an advocate is my favorite thus far.

Moving Forward

The beauty of this period in my life is that it's truly just the beginning. Our values and beliefs are bound to evolve like the seasons. My version of advocacy may look completely different a year from now and lead me to trek down another path. Although I may not know exactly how my future will unfold, I do know one thing for certain: When I am rooted in advocacy, I bloom.
